Hardly.
Are diapers a luxury?
So why are we taxing them like they are?
What is Question 5?
Question 5 will appear on the ballot in the general election on November 5th, 2024. The bill (SB428) passed with unanimous, bi-partisan support, through the 2023 Nevada Legislative Session and was signed by the Governor. A yes on question 5 would exempt child and adult diapers from sales tax to make them more affordable for Nevada's families.
Why it Matters
-
Diapers for babies, children, and adults are preventative healthcare supplies
-
19 other states exempt diapers from sales tax
-
Nevada already offers sales tax exemptions, for items including:
Medical Equipment
Feminine Hygiene Products
Food
Prosthetic Devices
Oxygen Delivery Equipment and Mobility Enhancing Equipment
-
Without a sufficient supply of diapers, babies, children, and adults are at risk for poor health outcomes
-
Without a sufficient supply of diapers, families can’t send their children to daycare, keeping caregivers from going to work or attending school
-
Children use 8-10 diapers each day, and families can spend up to $1200 a year for each child who needs diapering supplies
-
Diaper tax exemption would save Nevada families enough money each year to purchase a month’s supply of diapers
